Bare Root Evergreens and Birch liners The photo to the right is an example of our bare root birch, and below is our 4 year bare root Norway spruce, grown 3 more years from our one year Gro-Plug®. We start our premier bed run liners by using our 50 cell Gro-Plugs® to plant out in the field.  We grow them for three years to produce our finished product.  Our cool summers and cold Wisconsin winters are the perfect environment for growing strong thick tops and heavy root systems.  When we harvest our finished bare root liners, we normally find heavy mycorrhizae on the roots.  Our growing conditions are ideal for the establishment of mycorrhizae.  This native strain is a natural occurring fungus that works with the root system to help the plants take up more water and nutrients from the soil.  The roots have visible ore branching than plants grown without this beneficial fungus.  More branching on the roots means a faster established plant with a rapid growth rate in your field or container production.

Our cool summers help our evergreens have less stress than others in the summer months, but our harsh winters ensure you are getting very hardy plants for your production.  A double bonus.  

Our evergreens are harvested bed run.  You will always be guaranteed straight leaders and the wonderful Evergreen Nursery root system we are known for.  Growing our evergreens in the field and harvesting fresh in spring can always leave the door open for some Mother Nature issues like winter burn.  When this happens, keep in mind most of these imperfections will disappear with age. 

Bare Root Birch liners & containers.

Our many years of experience growing birch from seed, micropropagation, and cuttings has made Evergreen Nursery a leader in birch propagation.  We offer the newest varieties as well as the tried and true.

For the grower, our bare root birch is a great liner.  Plants are lined out in our field beds and grown for one season.  Cool summer temperatures and sandy soil promote sturdy tops and heavy, well-branched root systems.  In late fall we dig the trees and store them over winter in our specially designed cooler that provides optimal temperature and humidity.  No sweating is required when you receive our liners.  They are ready to plant and grow on.  

Our 38 cell birch liners are started from both hardy seed sources.  Seedlings are transplanted into the 38 cell trays that have deep inward ridges and a large drainage holes for optimal root training and pruning.  Liners spend the growing season outside, forming strong stems and roots.  Plants are shipped in spring and can be planted into your field or containers.  

Deciduous Shrub 18 Cell liners Our deciduous liners offer a "pot of potential" for you! We start our liners from our own softwood cuttings taken here at Evergreen Nursery in the summer months.  Our cool growing season and relatively low humidity is perfect for rooting and growing cuttings.  We have a high percentage of sunny days that rarely reach ninety degrees.  We use less mist and need less disease control to grow plants with large tops and heavy root systems.  Even though our plants may be pampered, our cold northern Wisconsin winters ensure the plants are as tough as can be.

What a money maker this product could be for you.  Pot these liners in fall or spring and grow for one season, and for most varieties you have a cost effective container to sell that season or the following spring.  You could also plant them in your field in spring and have them ready for your landscape jobs the next season. 

2 Year Evergreen 18 Cell liners Time waits for no one.... but these liners will wait for you. See our Norway spruce 18 cell liner below, then scroll down for more information on this line of trees. Many of our customers have asked for a reasonably priced container liner that is well branched, has a heavy root system, and has a larger window of time for planting.  We start with a root-trained Gro-Plug® seedling or a rooted cutting.  We pot into a 3.5" square by 5" deep pot and grow them on to a two-year-old seedling or to a two-year-old cutting grown liner.

This pot provides ample room for well-formed root development.  The plants are spaced with the necessary growing room to start forming healthy branches.  Our cool, sunny summers and relatively low humidity promote thick stems and heavy branches.  They are grown outside during the growing season and stored in unheated polyhouses in the winter. 

One factor that makes our plants exceptional is our growing environment.  Our evergreen 18 cell liners are grown in an organic medium that encourages strong tops and heavy roots.  Our native strains of ectomycorrhizae develop in our Gro-Plug® and 18 cell liners early.  Mycorrhizae fungus forms a beneficial association with the roots to enhance water and nutrient uptake.  This relationship can be seen on the short feeder roots as a white threadlike mold.  The roots and mycorrhizae work together to provide a healthier and larger plant.  Plants will establish easier and grow faster in your nursery because of this beneficial fungus.

The 18 cell liner is the ideal starter plant for field or container planting.  As a container liner in its own pot, it does not need to be planted immediately and will wait until you are ready.  We are confident you will find our evergreen quart liners a useful tool in your growing operation.

Plants are sold 18 pots per tray with a 3 tray minimum purchase. 

One Year Evergreen Seedling Gro-Plugs® The photo to the right is the root system on our white pine, below is our Norway Spruce. This tree is one year from seed, sold in full trays of 50 plants per tray. Our 50 cell gro-Plug® are one-year old trees when they arrive at your business.  We seed these in late February to early March and grow them for one growing season.  This line is always strong with the plants having many great uses.  We sell them to some of the largest grafting nurseries in the United States.  There is a good chance that when you are getting in your grafted spruce and pine trees, they started from our Norway Spruce and White Pine Gro-Plugs®.  These plants make great grafting stock as well as starter plants in your field or to pot up.  We use these Gro-Plugs® in our bare root evergreen fields.

We have the best evergreen seedling plug available to the nursery industry.  Our seedling plugs have healthy vigorous tops and root systems.  Our growing trays are SureRoots 50 cell.  It has American standard tray measurements of 11 1/4" wide by 21 1/2" long.  Each square cell measures 3.00" deep and 2.00" wide.  Each cell has ridges along the sides, running from top to bottom to prevent root circling.  The bottom has a webbed opening for perfect air-pruned roots.

Normally pine and fir varieties run 2" to 5" in height and spruce 4" - 8".

We have a three (3) tray minimum, you can mix full tray varieties to come to that.
